Description
Up for sale is an original Japanese good luck flag, hinomaru yosegaki, brought back by S/Sgt Theodore "Ted" Lapinski who served with the Fifth Air Force somewhere in the Pacific. Written on the flag are signatures and phrases such as “Complete certain victory” and “Warriors of the Sea, Glory of the nation.” Most interesting is the small text reading “Guam Landing Dec 11, 1941. Guam mop up complete Dec 12, 1941.” and “Wake Island complete control December 23, 1941.”Two things can be drawn from the inscriptions on the flag.
1. The soldier was in the Navy and apart of the fleet that invaded both Guam and later Wake Island.
2. December 11 and 12 doesn’t match up with the invasion of Guam which is on December 10. This could indicate a number of things such as his ship came later to Guam, or the flag was marked in commemoration to the attack and he got the dates wrong.
I purchased this flag off of Facebook from a user who purchased it from a Goodwill auction. It came with some military belongings of Ted and a flag he purchased during his time during the occupation of Japan. I only collect Japanese Army militaria so that’s the reason why I’m selling this flag. I found the obituary of Ted online so if you have any questions just let me know. This flag was translated by auther Dan King.
